  • Age/Gender: 50% Female, 57% under 1 year of age, 27% 1 to 4 years of age, in 2008.
  • Estimated Total Cost: $15,000 to $20,000
  • Profile: Both boys and girls, infants through older children, are available.
  • Parent Ages: Prospective adoptive parents must be at least 20 years older than the child, and not older than 55.
  • Family Status: Married couples and singles may adopt.
  • Travel: Both parents must travel. Length of stay is approximately 1 week.
  • Timeline: About 10 to 14 months from completion of paperwork to birthparent match or referral. From match or referral to travel, about 4 to 6 months.

Taiwan has a unique intercountry adoption process. Some agencies offer programs in which the birthparents select the adoptive parents, although traditional closed adoptions are also available. Parents are required to complete post-adoption reports for five years. Taiwan is not a member of the Hague Adoption Convention.
