  • 2010 adoptions: 62 children
  • Estimated Total Cost: $20,000 to $26,000
  • Profile: 58% Male, 51% are one to four years old; 39% are five years or older, in 2009.
  • Parent Ages: Adoptive parents must be at least 25 years old and 21 years older than the child. If married, only one parent needs to fulfill age requirements.
  • Family Status: Married couples and singles of the same sex as the child may adopt.
  • Travel: One or both parents may choose to travel. The in-country stay is generally four to six weeks.
  • Timeline: Approximately 12 months from dossier to placement.

Uganda is a small landlocked country in East Africa. The Department of Youth and Child Affairs handles adoption in Uganda. There were 62 adoptions to the U.S. in FY2010. Adopting parents should plan to remain in Uganda for up to six weeks for the required court appearance. Uganda is not a member of the Hague Adoption Convention.
